Hurray For Spring!

Ha! If only it would show itself over here, we still have snow every odd day and it's freezing cold thanks to the nice east wind that has been blowing strongly for days.

"Hurry For Spring" is the title of the final challenge of this Project Quilting Season. Unfortunately there just wasn't enough time for me to take part in challenge no. 5, due to work and other important appointments, and even though I'm currently sick with flu and still working lots, I decided that I just have to join up in the final challenge.

So what does spring resemble for me? The first flowers, blue skies, the grass starting to grow again and Easter. And since daffodils belong not just to the first flowers that start poking their heads through the naked soil of our garden, but also to Easter, I decided on them.

I created a small wall-hanging, using the Kanzashi technique and yo-yo templates to create different sized daffodils, which was a first as I've worked with yo-yo's before, but never made Kanzashi flowers. Since I had this tutorial book for them on my wishlist though, and received it for Christmas, this was the perfect time to try this technique out and it turns out to be suuuuper easy and fun!

Another first is me actively doing some free-motion quilting on this piece. I've never done that on a quilt before, least not the traditional way with feed dogs down and moving the piece with your hand, only on test swatches. It turned out pretty wobbly and with different stitch lengths showing, but I'm very pleased with the overall look of this piece, even though my shoulders were stiff afterwards as my neck had retracted into them like I was copying a turtle lol! :)

Here's a few more in-the-process pictures.

And some close-ups after finishing it.

This really puts me in the mood for spring and I am looking forward to all the different types of daffodils to start to bloom in our garden. I think I'm gonna name this piece "In Bloom". Just simple as that. My mother has already claimed it :)

I'm also linking this up to the Monthly Book Challenge at "Heart of Charnwood". Since I used the following book to learn about making the Kanzashi flowers.

Until next time!

And the Winner is....

It's time to reveal the winner of my giveaway that I held to participate in the "Beat the Winter Blues Blog Hop" of the Quilting Gallery

But first I want to thank each and everyone of you for joining my giveaway and for the amazing amount of new followers that I was able to welcome this way!
It's not long ago that I started blogging, only at the end of last year, so I was already proud to have 11 followers before I started this giveaway, but I have now an amazing 92 followers via GFC connect and I know from several more that signed up via email. YOU are simply awesome!

As a small reminder, this here could be won...

To make this fair I let Mr. Random pick the winner of the 230 comments received. Unfortunately several of these comments were from no-reply bloggers again. :(

I'm very happy to announce that the winner of my giveaway is comment No. 37 from Janet. Congratulations, Janet! I'll be sending you an email very soon!

Thanks again for joining up and following everyone!

Until next time,
xx Lia

Goodbye Google Reader, Hello Bloglovin'...

As you probably have already heard, Google is ending their Google Reader service on July 1, 2013.
That was a little shock to me, since I am following around 100 blogs through Google Reader and have loved the easy way of navigating and using it. So my initial reactions was 'WHAT? NO! NO! NO!'

But then I realised that most of the bloggers that I'm following have started switching over to BlogLovin' and out of the Readers that I looked at, that is really the one that looked best to me personally, as well.

So I signed up to BlogLovin' and have also added the follow button in the column to the right of this blog.

I would be happy if you all follow me over there. It's really easy to use and the navigation at the top is easy, too.

Also, I will announce the winner of my Winter Blues Blog Hop Giveaway in a little over an hour, so check back later to see if you've won something ;)

Until then,
xx Lia

A big Welcome and a few WiP's

First of I wanna thank all my new followers for signing up to my Blog! I can't believe that the Winter Blues Blog Hop Giveaway boosted me from 11 to 82 followers so far! That's only 18 more to go to 100! Whoop, whoop!

Thank you all so much for deciding that you want to read my ramblings and check out my work! You're awesome!

That being said, I noticed that several of you, also a few of the ones who signed up through GFC, are no-reply-bloggers. That means that your email address isn't public in your profile and your comments get sent from a no-reply email address. Since I reply to all comments in a giveaway, there are several ones that I wasn't able to reply to. So please, if you haven't received an email reply from me, and you haven't written down your email address in your comment, make sure that you update your profile, so that your email address is shown on it. Else you won't be able to win anything! And that was already mentioned in the giveaway post, so please, please, please - it's your chance to win something...

You can still join my giveaway by the way, so if you haven't done it yet, make sure you do it here: Winter Blues Giveaway

Now that we have that out of the way, this week is super busy, and since it's Wednesday and all you bloggers love your Wednesday Work-in-Progress posts, here's my WIP:

I can't really reveal anything about the projects yet and the Textile Art Paint is for fabric stamping, because I really want to try that out.
Has anyone of you done that before? Any tips? Or anything I should not try? Would love to get your input :)

Until next time!
xx Lia

Monthly Book Challenge...March

As mentioned in my previous post, I am trying to get all the "Must Do's" on my list done early this month.

I've been actually trying to find a different book for this month's entry for Angie's Monthly Book Challenge on her blog Heart of Charnwood, but for some reason I am still in the same book and it is yet another bag... *coughs*

I will try to make a different item this month as well, from another book, since it seems like we can have more than one entry, but so far - unfortunately - this will have to do... *hangs head in shame*

This little zippered pouch was made from a pattern called Viktoria and I actually made it as a part of the package of sewing goodies that I will be giving away at the end of this week as part of the "Beat the Winter Blues - Quilter's Blog Hop Party" that starts on the 8th of March. So make sure you return back then to enter the giveaway! And thanks to Angie for the tip that everyone loves pouches ;)

See you next Friday!

Just Spoolin' Around - Entry for Block of the Month, March

I decided to work on the block for this month early as my March is packed with lots of work and appointments and I don't want to reach the end of the month and realise, damn, I don't have time to finish the things I wanted to.

So here is my entry for the "And Sew On..." Block of the Month Challenge over at Kristy's Blog "Quiet Play".

This month's block is called "Just Spoolin' Around" and since I decided that using solids would be too boring, and I didn't want to use textured fabrics on the thread part of the spools either, I simply machine stitched along my fabric pieces, to make them look like there's actually thread on them. These close-up pictures were all taken in normal daylight. I apologise for the bad quality, I desperately need a new camera, but unfortunately the one that I bought made even worse pictures so I sent it back and have now been using my old one again.

Also this block was created on my mum's machine, the machine I've been using for over 2 years until buying my own one last Christmas, a Singer Confidence 7647, which is now off to be repaired. Seems I got a Monday model, as everything was going fine, she was sewing fine, too, but then started to make these scratchy noises on the inside - somewhere behind the actual program key part of the machine - which got so bad at some point that it sounded like something was abrading on the inside. So yeah, now she's off to the doctor and I miss her already!

That aside, I have to say, I'm really starting to love paper-piecing as I am beginning to get a bit more practice with these blocks. It's so much fun and great for an extensive scrap stash like mine.

Can't wait for the April block now. So roll on April! ;)

And I apologise in advance, but there will be two blog posts today, lol!

xx Lia
